Title: Comets and circumstellar dust

  Since comets are pristine solar-system objects, they must abound in
  the circumstellar disks which surround young stellar objects. Infrared
  spectroscopy is by excellence the tool to explore the composition
  of these disks, and the field has received a substantial boost from
  the possibilities offered by the Infrared Space Observatory ISO. We
  present ISO results for the circumstellar disks of several Herbig
  Ae/Be stars, pointing out their rich mineralogy and several links
  with features observed in solar-system comets and interplanetary dust
  particles. Several disk spectral features are clearly linked with
  those found in solar-system objects, but have no counterpart in the
  interstellar medium. The study of circumstellar disks of young stars
  is then not only relevant for our own solar system, but also offers
  new perspectives for the study of emerging planetary systems around
  other stars. A striking result is that several cometary features are
  also observed in the stationary disks which surround evolved binary
  systems, suggesting that the formation of bodies of substantial sizes
  is a natural process in dusty environments with suitable densities
  and a reasonable lifetime.

  The methods of determining stellar temperatures from color and energy
  distribution, from ionization, and from the Boltzmann function are
  discussed and are shown to depend upon complicated conditions in
  the atmospheres of the stars which are not sufficiently known at the
  present time to permit the derivation of reliable temperatures. Direct
  methods of determining the effective temperatures of stars give 33000
  for class cMo and 10,5000 for class Ao. These values are regarded
  as well established, their un- certainty being estimated at no more
  than 5 per cent. It is suggested that from the degree of accordance
  between these temperatures and those obtained by other indirect methods
  information may be obtained concerning the conditions prevailing in
  the at- mosphere of the stars
